Generally Batam is a safe place, In fact I feel safer in Batam than I felt in Singapore.

In fact some people also share the same thought as you.
In indonesia especially Batam , crime rate is low although there are many low income or jobless people around. The people seems to be easily contented and grateful when they are being given a full time job.
From my own encounter, generally those not so well to do or poor indonesian people usually will ask for money on the street from the locals / tourist. Even they are being rejected, they will still greet us with respect.
However, this is not the case in JB where news reported many cases of sporean being robbed in bolehland. The desperate robbers will usually attack the victim and rob away his/her possesion. Security in JB has to be step-up by the authority in order to control the high crime rate there.
Therefore concurred with you that Batam is generally a safe place to stay.
