Don't google earth it, google map it. You will see that the route to Vung Tau involves having to cross Saigon Bridge - Xa Lo Ha Noi - Quoc Lo 1A - enter Dong Nai Province near Bien Hoa City, turn off at Quoc Lo 51 and head due south to get to Vung Tau.

Google Maps (search for Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam)

On the other hand, if you take a ferry, you basically just go south along the Nha Be River, when you emerge at the South China Sea just go east a little bit and you're there.

Faster. Simpler. Less Risk.
