As for the food stalls around Ben Thanh market, it is targeted towards tourist. The food is from average to above average. For me, there are always better and more affordable alternatives to the type of food served around the market area. The only problem is that most of the places you would require to know basic vietnamese to set there. However, that is slowly changing as more and more foreignors are venturing out and now more places have "photo albums" as menus....

You are spot on bro, This trip I stayed in at A&EM hotel at the part of town near the market and at cheaper rate with similar room, clean and Girl friendly. It's Walking distance to my favourite afternoon hobby of getting my hair washed and back rubbed by a SYT.
The new place has a rather nice looking MILF chambermaid too, with large boobs, too bad my gf was with me .
As for food and ordering, just get a "long haired" talking menu reader lar
