Mother dropped by to 'babysit' my son while the three of us went to the hospital. The therapy was taking a toll on my wife and she seem to have contracted bronchitis.

"Did you hear what they said about Wanda?" Mother asked.

I gave a sigh before I replied a "No".

"They said this girl is dressing more and more sexily. The clothes she wears are not maid clothes. They look more like those from one of those atas department shops. And the perfume she wears, I tell you; she's got 'come date me' sprayed all over her." Mother complained.

"The clothes that she wears are bought by me, Mother." my wife replied, "and the fragrance that you mentioned must be the body shower that we use. We don't allow her to apply make-up or spray perfume when she goes out, Mother. But we have noted your concerns and I will remind Wanda not to act in a brazen manner." my wife assured Mother.

During most of the conversation, Wanda was smart enough to make herself scarce. Only when she heard my wife start coughing again did she scurry back into the living room. Bowing her head low, she asked for permission to 'escort' my wife back to the study room.

"Your wife seems to be in bad shape." Mother said in a hushed tone.

"Yes, the doctors aren't that optimistic." I said grimly.

"So when she's gone, I suppose Wanda will be her replacement?" Mother's question shocked me. I stared at her with my mouth open.

"That was what happened at her last employment. She got 'promoted' from maid to mistress of the house. Why did you think her employers sent her away and replaced her with an older maid?"

I thought back to the excellent testimony that her previous employer gave. What a change in events?

"If I had accompanied you to the Maid Agency that day, you wouldn't have ended up with this maid. What's so good about her, anyway?" Again, Mother had got me speechless; I knew whatever reason I gave, she was sure to have a rebuttal. Apparently, Nurul and her gang had told her some additional stories about Wanda. This time around, instead of coming to Wanda's defense, I coaxed my mother to tell me more.

"Ibu, I need more solid evidence or the Maid Agent will not allow me to return the maid without expecting me to pay," I told Mother, "tell me more. I want to know." I said confidently.
