I think you guys are smokers, so you have no idea how annoying and disgusting is the smell of smoke for non-smokers. Evening kissing a smoking girl for a non-smoker is not a pleasant experience.
If you smoke in a room, just one cigarette, the room will be contaminated with the smoke smell and it will be very difficult to clean it.
A non-smoker will reject the room, and, if forced to stay there, will never go back to that hotel.
In high-class hotels, if you smoke in a non-smoking room, they charge you something like 150-250 USD additional fee for cleaning it, which is a long and complex process (this is normal policy in Europe or USA, I bet also in KL or Singapore).
No need of a smoke detector (this is not a plane): the nose of anyone entering the room is enough.
