Yes - it is GENERALLY safer to go through OKT's but there are always exceptions.

My friend had gone to the Peninsula KTV - a pretty solid/OK establishment in CP, and got his girl via a mommie he had satisfactorily used for a long period of time. So of course when it happened he called the Mommie/The Pen and that was when the mommie said that she herself could not find the girl as she had only started work on a temporary pass.

To their credit though, after reviewing the Miraton hotel CCTV that indeed the thief had left my friend's room with a large bag, they agreed to give him RMB 8,000 Peninsula KTV credit as partial compensation etc. Better than nothing - even though my friend lost approximately 12K. And yes, he did keep lots more cash and his travel documents etc in the safe but what he lost he had out and I think most guys will also keep these general items out... phone, computer, watch and ring he was wearing and wallet with some cash etc.
