Locals, tourists stranded in Hat Yai
Published: 2/11/2010 at 10:48 AM
Online news:

About 10,000 local residents and tourists in Hat Yai were trapped by flash floods which hit the southern tourist city early Tuesday morning, Hat Yai Mayor Prai Pattano said.

The floodwater in the city’s business area was measured at two to three metres deep, he said.

Mr Prai said the situation is much more severe than the flood that hit the city in 2000.

“No one had expected that the situation would be so critical, and therefore there was no evacuation of residents or tourists,” he admitted.

He asked for donations of drinking water and food for the flood victims.

He said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will fly to Hat Yai this afternoon to see the situation at first hand.

Residents told to flee amid rush for essentials
Published: 2/11/2010 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

SONGKHLA : Hat Yai Municipality has rushed to declare its flood-prone areas a "red flag zone" in anticipation of heavy floods striking within six hours.

Shoppers stock up on essentials in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district yesterday in case of severe flooding in the lower South’s main commercial and tourist district. Heavy rains continue over the region and residents fear a repeat of the tragedy that has struck many in recent weeks in the Northeast and Central Plains provinces. WICHAYANT BOONCHOTE

The municipality has urged 3,500 residents to evacuate.

The municipality was harshly criticised for reacting slowly to the severe floods in the province's commercial hub in 2000, hence the hurry to announce the emergency zone.

Hat Yai mayor Prai Pattano yesterday said he expected the flooding to be more severe than in 2000. He told people to stockpile dried food and take their cars to higher ground.

The announcement caused heavy traffic jams in the municipality as motorists competed for parking and shopping mall parking spaces were quickly snapped up.

Mobile phone communication failed as people called the municipality for updates on the flooding, overloading the system.

Some parts of Hat Yai are already under water. Many schools in the municipality were closed yesterday and three hospitals in the province were forced to evacuate patients.

Somdet Phra Boromrachininat Hospital in Na Thawi district and Sadao Hospital in Sadao district were flooded and had to relocate patients to other hospitals. Na Thawi Hospital had to temporarily open its outpatients department at Na Thawi district office, Public Health Minister Jurin $$$$$navisit said yesterday.

Hat Yai Central Hospital, which has 2,000 patients, could be the next victim as heavy rain is continuing, Mr Jurin said. He told the hospital to beef up its flood prevention measures and stockpile liquefied oxygen for emergency use.

Songkhla governor Winyu Tongsakul said the flooding prompted the province to declare Hat Yai, Na Thawi and Sadao, together with its other flood-hit districts of Chana, Thepha, Rattaphum, Bang Klam, Khlong Hoi Khong, Na Mom and Saba Yoi, disaster zones.

The Meteorological Department has warned people in the South to brace for more rain over the next two days because of the influence of a depression in the Gulf of Thailand.

The storm was 280 kilometres off the coast yesterday and was expected to arrive on the mainland today somewhere between Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani, said Wanchai Sakudomchai, the director for meteorology for the eastern coast of the South.

Khuan Don was worst hit with two mosques and state agencies in two tambons _ Yan Sue and Khuan Don _ inundated. About 1,150 households were affected.

Schools in Phatthalung and Pattani have also been closed due to floods.

Phatthalung governor Phisit Boonchuang yesterday warned people living near the Banthad mountain range in Pa Bon, Si Banphot, Kong Ra and Tamot districts to stay alert to the possibility of mudslides.

In Surat Thani, ferocious waves damaged 80 metres of a sea wall built along a seaside road in Don Sak district while 675 households in Phanom and Khian Sa districts were affected by flooding, the province's disaster prevention and mitigation centre said.

His Majesty the King, who has been keeping a close watch on the flood situation in the South, has donated one million baht through the Internal Security Operations Command's 4th Region to buy relief supplies.

The King yesterday also donated another 10 million baht to help flood-affected people in the central and northeastern provinces.

Hi there everyone,

Sad to hear the calmities happening in LOS Hatyai city.

Rain will definitely stop over there, if the Pahang River over here, is flooded, but at present, the Pahang river looks very crystal clear and smooth.

It is the usual yearly affair and also a yearly prediction.

This is one of the NATURE ways of telling the Humans not to mistreat them and put more care and tenderness. So be prepared for more water companionships until after the Deepavali holidays for 3 more days.

take good care, all bros.....

Hat Yai city left reeling by its worst-ever flood
Published: 3/11/2010 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

SONGKHLA Rescuers have struggled to get help to thousands of people stranded in their homes after three days of heavy rain triggered a massive flash flood that knocked down power poles and cut communications in Hat Yai city.

Officials said tens of thousands of people were trapped yesterday in the southern commercial hub which is facing its worst-ever flood crisis.

Torrential rains since Monday caused by a depression in the Gulf of Thailand engulfed Hat Yai municipality and many other areas of the South.

Many districts are under as much as three metres of water. One resident has been electrocuted during the flooding.

Many residents are stranded on the second floor of their homes, unable to venture out for food and supplies, while tourists are being forced to stay in their hotel rooms as rescuers and relief supplies have yet to reach them.

There are about 850,000 people in greater Hat Yai and 180,000 in the city centre.

Officials said a woman was forced to give birth in her room in an apartment block as the high flood waters prevented her from being taken to hospital.

Major roads in Hat Yai such as Phetkasem, Thammanoonvithi and Niphat Uthit were cut by floods with traffic lights shorting out and abandoned vehicles covered with water.

A sudden power failure created panic throughout the municipality.

Meanwhile, banks, petrol stations, schools and state agencies have been shut indefinitely.

Patients at Hat Yai hospital had to be evacuated to higher floors to avoid surging flood waters.

Surachai Lumlertkittikul, director of Hat Yai General Hospital, said more than 500 patients in the hospital were suffering from a shortage of food as relief supplies were taking time to get through.

''Two of our three generators which we need to save the lives of seriously ill patients are out of action from the flooding, while fuel for the remaining one is near to running out,'' Dr Surachai said.

The power failure disrupted thousands of base stations for cellular phones. Mobile phone connections have failed in many areas, particularly in Hat Yai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Pattani and Surat Thani.

Kimyong and Santisuk markets, which are Hat Yai's major commercial areas and popular with tourists, are under 1.20 metres of water.

Hat Yai mayor Prai Pattano admitted the municipal authorities were caught off guard by the unusually heavy flooding.

''We are now at our wits' end in trying to deal with the crisis and get help through to the victims,'' Mr Prai said.

He said about 80% of Hat Yai was submerged and more than 30,000 households affected, with people stranded and helpless as rescuers cannot reach them yet.

Their Majesties the King and Queen have ordered staff at Taksin Palace in Narathiwat to supply food and clothing to flood victims.

Officials have delivered about 5,000 bags of supplies by helicopter to areas in Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Satun.

The navy, the air force and the army are working with aid agencies to try to get relief through to the flood victims.

Relief targets stranded
Published: 3/11/2010 at 12:00 AM
Newspaper section: News

The top priority in the flood relief effort is to get food and water to people trapped in buildings in Hat Yai city centre, Democrat Party MP Niphon Bunyamanee says.

Mr Niphon joined one of the first groups of authorities to reach the flooded inner precinct of the city yesterday.

He said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva wanted residents to stop worrying about moving their belongings. It was more important to keep themselves safe.

The sick, the elderly and children were to be evacuated first.

Mr Niphon said many stranded residents had not eaten for 24 hours. Food supplies were adequate but they could not be delivered to people because flood waters were too high.

He said authorities could manage only three inspection trips to the inner city yesterday. Limited provisions of dried food were distributed to small residential zones.

The first delivery of food supplies to the city centre is expected at 9am today. Small flat-bottom boats could not be deployed to deliver food because of strong water currents in many flooded areas.

Mr Niphon said Hat Yai municipality had told people to evacuate ahead of the flood but few heeded the warning.

He said most people underestimated the situation as they did not expect a major flood.

He said hotels were running out of food to feed their guests. Rescue workers were responding to calls for help by residents who flashed torches from flooded buildings and homes.

"We have enough relief supplies from donations but we can't go in and hand them out," he said.

Mr Niphon said small sois in downtown Hat Yai had turned into rapids off limits even to military trucks. Military boats with high-powered engines were sent to assist residents in flooded zones.

Hat Yai was plunged into complete darkness last night because of blackouts which also paralysed telecommunications.

Hatyai residents in shock

Report from The Nation dated wednesday 3 November 2010 :-

Hatyai residents in shock - Songkhla flood brings back bad memories of past disasters, as some residents forced on to roofs

Flooding has returned to torment Hat Yai residents like a recurrent nightmare.

Chalermchai Thongkaew-on, a resident in tambon Khuan Lang's Na Khuan village, found there was little he could do, no matter how well he prepared. After three days of heavy rain he ended up stuck on the roof of his two-storey home with both the ground and second floors submerged.

Chalermchai, who survived the flood in 2000, said his family lost many belongings in the water that time. And he has stocked up on food ahead of every rainy season ever since, as a precaution.

He relived the nightmare on Monday night, when water 2 metres deep forced him to sleep on the roof.

"This flood is worse than in 2000, because that time I was still able to live on the second floor," he said.

Many neighbours also had a terrible experience in 2000, so they were all prepared, moving belongings higher and storing dried food, he said. But none thought the water would rise so fast or by so much this time - everyone ended up sitting on their roofs waiting for local officials to help or rescue them.

Another resident, Thakorn Thiprongpol, said he used to live in low-lying Bang Faeb village, which was hit hardest in 2000 and gets flooded every year. Having moved "uphill" to Na Khuan village, he couldn't believe his new house would also be hit by flooding.

Thakorn said it rained hard on Monday night, and just half an hour after a public flood warning was issued, his home was inundated. Fifteen minutes later, it was under water 2 metres deep. He expected the flood water to remain for three to four days, but said his family had some rice, vegetables and eggs and a gas cylinder.

Many residents in Songkhla's Na Thawi district, which was hit by a 1.2-metre flash flood on Monday night, weren't even able to grab belongings in time despite a warning from tambon officials.

Second-hand-car dealer Jeerapong Janjaroenkul said his family hurriedly moved their cars to higher ground but the flood hit so fast that two cars were submerged. He lamented that this flood was worse than in 2007, when a 60-centimetre-deep flood hit his shop.

"Now water has covered the car roofs. Na Thawi never had a flood before, and now it has," he said, adding that his family slept on the one-and-a-half-storey house's upper deck. Neighbours with one-storey homes had had to move elsewhere.

Na Thawi resident Neramit Noisamlee expressed shock at seeing the district under water at least a metre deep, saying it had never happened before. He was concerned that water would rise to 2 metres and every area would be totally cut off from the outside world, as the authorities had cut power.

"I have instant noodles to live on during this flood, but it was a mistake, because I have no electricity to boil water and cook it, so I have to eat dried noodles. After 12 hours, I finally had a chance to eat cooked food - from a box provided by officials."

Southern rail, air links grind to halt

Report from Bangkok Post dated wednesday 3 November 2010 :-

Southern rail, air links grind to halt

Many rail and air transport services in parts of the South have been suspended as flash floods inundate the area.

Hat Yai railway station and several other nearby stations were under two metres of water yesterday.

Samui Airport was ordered closed from about 2pm until 9pm because of heavy rain, poor visibility and floods exacerbated by rising seas.

Services at Samui Airport are expected to return to normal today.

The State Railway of Thailand announced it would suspend four train services and cut short the route of three others.

The suspended trains are train 35 (Bangkok-Padang Besar), 37 (Bangkok-Sungai Kolok), 169 (Bangkok-Yala) and 173 (Bangkok-Nakhon Si Thammarat). Train 171 (Bangkok-Sungai Kolok), 167 (Bangkok-Kantang), and 85 (Bangkok-Nakhon Si Thammarat) will stop at Thung Song district of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The SRT will transport passengers by bus to their destinations from Thung Song, except for Sungai Kolok.

Hat Yai International Airport was opened for flights as usual yesterday despite surrounding areas being submerged by flood waters. About 30 passengers did not move from the airport.

The Royal Thai Air Forces' Wing 56 offered GMC trucks to ferry airline passengers to higher ground nearest to the Hat Yai city centre.
